Me and the guy I was dating at the time were going to a mall to have lunch with his parents are do some shopping. We started off by going to a nearby liquor store to buy some beer and cider for dinner, since they close at 3 p.m. we wanted to get that done so we didn't have to stress about it later. When we leave to go and meet up with his parents I realize that I'm going the wrong way, so I take the next exit to find a place to turn around.
The road we ended up on had a bus stop right after the exit, so I drive into the bus stop to make a U-turn. That's the last thing I remember.
When I start to wake up the first thing I realize is that there's a stranger in my passenger seat, telling me not to move my neck since it might be broken. I have glass fragments everywhere, in my mouth, in tiny wounds all over my body and the car had moved to the other side of the street and crashed into a family's back yard. I notice the guy I'm dating standing outside of the car with a tiny scratch on his cheek, the bus had only hit the driver's side.
Pretty soon the fire brigade show up, the stranger in my passenger seat moves and they take over. They have to cut the roof of the car to get me out. I remember being completely devastated, I couldn't stop crying, and the fireman holding my head up while they cut open the roof of my car kept asking what was wrong and where it was hurting, but I wasn't in physical pain. All I kept saying was "what's my dad gonna say?".
When they get the roof off the car, the ambulance staff take over. I'm still in shock and I keep saying "what's my dad gonna say?", until they tell me they need to take a blood test. I tell them it's not necessary and that I'm doing fine. They don't listen, and I scream so loud and I'm in so much pain that my "boyfriend" thinks my neck is broken.
At the hospital they have cut open my clothes to examine me, turns out there wasn't any major damage. A few broken ribs and a bunch of wounds covered in glass fragments, but that's all there was. They keep me for observation for a few hours, when they say I can leave I call my brother and ask him to come get us (and also bring some clothes I can borrow). When he finally got there, he looked like he expected me to be hooked up to a bunch of tubes and machines, but that wasn't the case. He then called my parents and told them what had happened. My brother drove us back to my "boyfriend"'s house and my parents came to get me the next day. Their mistake was going to have a look at the car before coming to see me. Naturally they expected much worse after having seen the car first, but it really wasn't too bad.
It feels pretty surreal. I still (approx. 3 years later) it's still hard to realize that it actually happened. You don't forget about it, it just seems surreal. The only "scar" I'd say I have is that I'm a little scared of busses while I'm driving. But seeing as people who have seen photos of the car say that I should've died - I consider that a win.
