Another example, that was aired on Swedish crime show Kalla Fakta (or Efterlyst, don't remember), is two guys who lived in a suburb somewhere. They called the police and said their dog was missing. They got reimbursed for the loss of their dog and got a new dog. A few months later those same guys called and reported their second dog missing, which the police found very peculiar. An investigation was started and the police found body parts of the first dog in a forest near the two guys' house, and apparently the second dog was found in their freezer - cut up into smaller pieces to make it fit. The reason for this abuse was insurance fraud.
Not too long after that a guy in his early 20's abused his 14-week old puppy (also a pit bull-type dog) and then strangled it to death. His reason was that he was sick of the puppy being "whiny" and peeing in the house.
HOW CAN ANYONE BE THAT HEARTLESS??! It's beyond me. In no way is it ok to treat animals this way, and usually it's pit bull type dogs that are abused the worst. Most likely beacause people get dogs to look cool, or to create some sort of image, and then it turns out that they aren't capable of giving the dog the physical and mental excercise it needs. These dogs are terriers, they're big, strong and stubborn. Not everyone has the mental strength to give these dogs what they need.
Everytime I read or hear about things like this, it breaks my heart. I could write pages and pages about how angry and upset it makes me, and how there isn't a single punishment in the world that fits the crime when it comes to these things. But, thankfully, there are good people out there. People who spend their entire lives taking care of and re-homing dogs like this. I got Ozzy from one of thse organisations.
Ozzy's from a shelter in Bromma (a suburb to Stockholm), and every single day I am amazed and confused as to how anyone could have treated him the way he's been treated. That someone actually thought it was a good idea to kick a puppy to get it to be more obedient. I didn't get too much information about the things my dog had been exposed and put through, they don't like to tell too much of the dogs' stories because that can lead to people pitying them and being "nice" to them, which is not what they need, but from what I heard Ozzy had been kicked in the head, hit and abused, and also something about him being dragged behind a subway train (don't know how much of that story is actually true though). It took a lot of hard work and trust excercises to get him where he is today. When we first brought him home he didn't trust people, had one eye that was smaller than the other (probably from being hit/kicked in the head). He'd get jumpy and scared every time someone would make a sudden move or someone took out pots and pans in the kitchen and he was also scared of men. Now he follows my dad everywhere and they're best buds. ☺ It makes me so happy that he got a second chance at life and a chance to become a normal dog. He still has some problems but they're worked on every single day. I'm relly happy that i chose to adopt a dog rather than buying one from a breeder, it's a lot more work but it's so worth it. ♥
